HIDE TITLE
The NAIP imagery program began as a pilot project in 2002. The pilot compared 35mm slides to imagery from mapping cameras. As illustrated on the map 1m and 2m partial natural color film photography was acquired.
The NAIP imagery is acquired on a 5 year cycle. Imagery is natural color and color infrared collected at both 2m and 1m spatial resolution. 2m states were collected for compliance purposes.
Coverage for 2004 is mainly film based consisting of 1m and 2m acquisitions in both natural color and color infrared. ID, LA, MT, TX, and WY are digital acquisitions. 2004 is also the beginning of a 3 year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract. There were 10 vendors flying NAIP imagery under this contract.
The 2005 NAIP acquisition features more states with full coverage and digital acquisition doubles to 10 states (CA, LA, FL, MS, MT, WA, ND, MI, TX, and SC). Compressed county mosaics (CCM) compression ratio was changed from 50:1 to 15:1.
Pilot is conducted using Utah imagery to test changing spatial accuracy determination from relative accuracy (image to image) to absolute control (photo identifiable ground control points). Testing spatial accuracy of imagery using absolute control methods is an industry standard and introduces less error than relative accuracy.
The default spectral resolution for NAIP was natural color (Red, Green, and Blue, or RGB) but beginning in 2007 some states were delivered with four bands of data: RGB and Near Infrared. Arizona was delivered as 1m 4 bands.
2008 marks the first year that the program acquires all imagery with a 1 meter ground sample distance (GSD).
2009 provides complete 1 meter coverage for all states acquired. Absolute control is used to determine the spatial accuracy of the imagery in all states.
2010 is the first year that all states are acquired digitally with four bands of data. 2010 is also the first year that imagery is served out as state based web services both internally to FSA and to the public.
All coverage is 1m 4 band (Natural Color/Color Infrared). First year a state based seam line shapefile is available providing information about imagery collection. The information is available as a web service and as digital files.
2012 marks the beginning of a new five year IDIQ contract using three prime vendors.
2013 marks the first 1/2 meter state (ID) to be delivered as part of the NAIP imagery program. The 1/2 meter ground sample distance (GSD) was a buy-up option since 2011.
NAIP 2014 imagery coverage consists of 25 states at 1 meter resolution. 2014 marks a continuation of the FSA early access project which allows FSA employees and partner agencies access to imagery in a vendor produced web service 3 to 5 days after the imagery is acquired. All states except OR, TN, MS, and NC are part of the early access pilot continuation. 2014 is also a transition year for NAIP status maps from ArcGIS Server web maps to ArcGIS Online hosted web maps.
NAIP 2015 imagery coverage consists of 2 states delivered as 1/2 meter resolution and 25 states at 1 meter resolution.
2016 marks the first 60cm NAIP acquisition. 14 states will be acquired at 60cm and 8 states at 1 meter. This will be the final year of a 5 year IDIQ contract which started in 2012.
NAIP 2017 imagery coverage includes 26 states. 3 are 60cm resolution and 23 are 1 meter resolution. NAIP continues to be collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR).
This is the first year that all NAIP imagery is 60cm spatial resolution. This year there is a partnership with the State of Oregon where that state will be acquired through an agreement separate from the rest of the NAIP collection. Oregon imagery will have a 30cm spatial resolution also a first for the NAIP program . NAIP continues to be collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR).
All NAIP imagery acquired in 2019 is 60cm spatial resolution. 60 centimeters is now the default spatial resolution for NAIP imagery. NAIP continues to be collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR).
2020 NAIP imagery has a 60cm spatial resolution. NAIP continues to be collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR).
2021 NAIP imagery continues to be collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR) with a 60cm spatial resolution. The 2021 collection includes 3 states flown for disaster response at 30cm (LA, MS, AL) spatial resolution. This will be the first year that Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands will be collected as part of the NAIP program.
2022 NAIP imagery is collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR) with a 60cm spatial resolution. The 2022 collection includes 1 state flown at 30cm (OR) spatial resolution. Oregon was acquired at this higher spatial resolution through a cooperative agreement with the state.
2023 NAIP imagery is collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR) with 60cm or higher spatial resolution. The 2022 collection is being acquired by 3 vendors with a variety of 30 to 60 cm imagery. 2023 has a record number of states being delivered at 30 cm spatial resolution.
2024 NAIP imagery is collected as 4 band imagery (RGBNIR) with standard 60cm spatial resolution. 18 full states and 3 partial states are being acquired. The partial states are will fill in areas of 3 states which were incomplete in 2023 due to weather conditions. Two states (NM & OR) are being collected at 30cm resolution as part of a contractual buy up. 2024 NAIP is acquired by 3 vendors through the Pine BPA imagery contract.
